Abstract

Hitting is, in part, the art of handling failure. Statistically, a 30% success rate is exceptional, meaning 70% of the time hitters fail. Therefore, managing and maintaining personal motivations, particularly mastery beliefs and orientation is imperative in baseball. Accomplishing this goal requires hitters to embrace a new definition of success by developing a deeper intellectual appreciation for hitting. The purpose of this paper is to outline the Growth Hitting System (GHS) which systematically promotes growth mindsets and mastery orientation development by focusing on process goals and redefining outcome goals in baseball by focusing on “quality contact” rather than base hits.
