Abstract
Casa de las Americas (CASA) is an independent cultural institution linked to the Cuban Ministry of Culture. Its task is to develop socio-cultural ties with the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.Founded and presided over by Haydee Santamaria until her death in 1980,* CASA opened a breach in the cultural blockade against the Cuban Revolution. Since 1960, CASA has organized an annual Literacy Prize which has become the most prestigious competition in the Americas, drawing important Latin American and Caribbean writers as judges. In its 25 years of operation, CASA has organized numerous meetings, symposia, exhibitions and contests. These events have brought together writers, artists, researchers and specialists from all over Latin America. Casa de las Americas has also published many books, a large number of which are devoted to the study of Latin American culture.Following is an address presented at the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Casa de las Americas by George Lamming.
