Abstract

John B. Goodenough is a towering solid-state physicist and was awarded the 2019 Noble Prize in Chemistry when he was 97. As the author of more than 800 research articles and 8 books, he has had a significant impact on interdisciplinary science by being a strong force in bridging chemistry, physics, and materials engineering. He has made a seminal breakthrough in the development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), particularly the discovery of cathode materials, including LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, and LiFePO4. His contributions also cover other energy-conversion systems and the Goodenough-Kanamori rule. This article is dedicated to Prof. Goodenough for his upcoming 100th birthday.
