Abstract

Creating a desirable 21st century Africa is by definition, Utopian. The futurist must first leapfrog into the 21st century to design an ideal African society, and then evolve effective strategies for its achievement, taking full cognizance of existing obstacles and challenges. The tools required include vision, intellectual virtuosity, long-term strategic thinking, conceptual boldness, creative genius and a penchant for understanding the African Dream in its complexity. A distinction must be made between culture and technology, as it is on its cultural wealth that Africa can build an enabling environment for transformation. In this regard, Africa need not aspire to Western expectations. This article introduces the concept of cultural resonance, and calls for a cultural renaissance, and for a drive for technological excellence at the cutting edge of science. The most significant requirement for creating a desirable 21st century Africa is excellent governance with responsibility, accountability, transparency and creative vision, and the full and active participation by all citizens. This requires inspired, enlightened and honest leadership, with a passion to transform Africa.
