Abstract

Structures that absorb energy efficiently have applications in many fields. In this paper, thin-walled structures with hexagonal, circular, X-type, square and octagonal cross-sectional shapes subjected to quasi-static compression are analyzed using FEM simulation. The results showed that the shape of the cross section has a significant effect on the mechanical properties and energy absorption capability. All structures of various cross-sectional shapes show almost the same specific stiffness, but the specific strength varies with the corner numbers. For energy absorption, the hexagonal structure exhibits the best specific energy absorption and crush stress efficiency among all considered structures.
