Abstract

In this paper the self-consistent symmetries in a rotating frame are examined, and their consequences are demonstrated in the case of a triaxial Cartesian basis. The use of Skyrme interaction together with the symmetry properties are shown to lead to significant simplifications in the calculations. Next the rotating-oscillator model is introduced and a simple derivation of the wave functions is given. A variational calculation is then carried out for the rotational spectrum of light nuclei. The well-known antistretching effect as well as the occurrence of triaxial shapes at high angular momenta are well reproduced in this calculation, although the spectra obtained are compressed, compared to the exact projection results. The cut-off frequency calculation agrees with the prediction based on the isotropic-velocity-distribution hypothesis.
