Abstract
The best scenario is a dust bowl depression. Millions roam the countryside looking for food, having given up the search for work years earlier. Others live on the streets of the large cities or construct homes from the debris of previous decades. The President and his opponent are decrying the size of government spending and promise, above all, to balance the budget. There is no labor movement to protect the rights of those still employed on the job. Blacks and the aged fare even worse than younger whites, except for those still living in the agricultural south where rice, beans, and turnips are still available, unless the landlord has seen fit to order you off the land.
