Abstract

The pattern of cracks in reinforced concrete (RC) indicates the degradation of structural integrity and softening of concrete materials. This study investigated the cracking behavior of RC piles caused by reinforcement corrosion in a harsh marine environment. Fractal analysis was used to investigate 12 carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthened RC piles in different states of reinforcement corrosion. There was a good correlation between mechanical properties and fractal dimension. Results also demonstrated that fractal analysis together with the crack width could be exploited to assess corrosion damage when mechanical testing is not feasible.
