Abstract

The area ahead of the crack tip in single crystals of copper fatigued in pull-pull was studied using optical and electron microscopy techniques. Through microhardness measurements, it was found that a zone of higher hardness near the fatigue crack tip corresponds roughly to the size of the fatigue crack plastic zone calculated from fracture mechanics criteria. Electron microscopy observations revealed a distinct dislocation structure associated with this zone of higher hardness.
