Abstract

This paper examines the spatial distribution of Vickers indentation-induced cracks in thin silica films of constant thickness on a compliant polymeric substrate. The mean indentation crack spacing in the film is described very well by the simple, nondimensional, empirical expression 〈 Λ〉= χ m , where 〈 Λ〉 is a nondimensional function of mean crack spacing and χ is a nondimensional function of the applied load.
