Abstract

The paper reviews the methodologies that are being used to quantify the effect of cracks in austenitic stainless steel structures. As a framework for discussion, these methodologies, i.e. net-section stress and tearing modulus, used to describe respectively the onset of crack extension and crack stability, are considered with regard to the behaviour of a circumferential through-wall crack in a piping system.
