Abstract

Our previous study on lead (Pb2+) toxicity in breast milk of women from the Ranipet industrial area brought out some interesting results, hence this work focuses on utilizing low-cost wastes, crab shell (CS) and Annona squamosa [custard apple shell (CAS)] for adsorption of Pb2+ and cadmium (Cd2+) from aqueous solutions, and as an application to remove the same from effluent, which is a main source of contamination in that area. The CAS was treated with calcined CS to give the crab shell-treated custard apple shell (CS-CAS), and its efficiency to absorb Pb2+ and Cd2+ was compared with Ca(OH)2-treated CAS under different conditions of pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial metal ion concentration, and temperature. Optimized conditions for maximum adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ were studied and reported. Further study was carried out to remove Pb2+ and Cd2+ from industrial effluents which were studied at different pH. The results suggest that the low cost CS-CAS could adsorb higher than 90 % levels of initial metal ion concentration, and thus it is inferred that this material can be used for efficient removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from aqueous samples.
