Abstract
In the garnet (Gd, Ca)3 (Ga, Mg, Zr)2 Ga3 O12, Cr3+ is located in sites of intermediate crystal field strength. This induces a fast energy transfer to Nd3+. We have shown that it is possible to differentiate Cr3+ in sites of rather strong field against sites of rather weak crystal field. Different spectroscopic measurements allow us to conclude that Cr3+ ions in weaker crystal fields are mainly responsible for the energy transfer to Nd3+.
