Abstract

Incorporation of large amounts of Nd 3+ and Cr 3+ in LaMgAl 11O 19 (LMA) crystals grown by the flame fusion method is done without affecting the crystal quality. Fluorescence properties of codoped LMA : Cr 3+, Nd 3+ single crystals are reported. Both radiative and nonradiative Cr 3+ to Nd 3+ energy transfers occur. The transfer efficiency may reach about 90% but is slow, as the Cr 3+ ions are located predominantly in high crystal field sites. Sensitization of Nd 3+ by Cr 3+ could be interesting for CW laser applications. The influence of the Cr 3+ and Nd 3+ concentrations and of the excitation wavelength is discussed.
