Abstract

AbstractA novel ultra‐wideband (UWB) design of a single‐layer coplanar waveguide (CPW)‐fed planar monopole antenna with a frequency‐band notch function is presented. By inserting an opened rectangular loop slot to the ground‐notched triangular patch and adjusting the dimensions of the slot, the proposed antenna, which includes two notched ground planes only 24 mm in width and 31 mm in height, can reach a frequency bandwidth, defined by VSWR < 2, of 9 GHz (from 3.1 to 12.1 GHz), covering the entire UWB band (3.1–10.6 GHz), and have a frequency notch of 780 MHz (from 5.06 to 5.84 GHz) for band rejection of the IEEE 802.11a frequency band (5.15–5.825 GHz). Good monopolelike radiation patterns and antenna gains, except in the notched frequency band, have also been obtained. Details of the proposed antenna design and the measured results are presented and discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
