Abstract

In this work we investigate the CPE (constant phase element) behavior of gold thin films with EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). With results obtained on four technologically different gold thin films in different electrolytes we demonstrate that the consideration of capacitance dispersion of the working electrode is necessary for the precise determination of the double layer capacitance and charge transfer resistance in electrochemical sensor applications. We also investigate the effect of surface roughness of the electrodes on the CPE behavior.
