Abstract

The well-defined organometallic compound Cp*RuCl(η2-CH2 CHCN)(PPh3) in conjunction with ethyl 2-bromopropionate as initiator promote controlled/living radical polymerization of styrene at 90°C. Molecular weight increased linearly with conversion and was in good agreement with the theoretical molecular weight. Observed polydispersities were narrow (1.07–1.04) and decreased with monomer conversion. When a proportion of 5:1 equivalents of diethylamine:initiator was added to the initiating system, an increase of 9 times in the polymerization rate was observed, keeping a good control of polymerization process, as polydispersity changed to 1.09–1.17.
