Abstract

The rarity of pandemics has undermined the attention it receives from the public in its initial stage. Even though the information on the COVID19 virus was prevalent for months, the individual level precautionary actions were missing until the COVID19 lockdown announcement. We have explored the post-announcement response mechanism of the Indian working class through preventive actions at the individual level and expectations from the Government at the systemic level using Partial Least Square based Structural equation modeling(PLS-SEM). The survey was conducted for five days, between the lockdown announcement and the first day of the lockdown, to ascertain the announcement-driven response mechanism. Though the anxieties are related, we observed that a specific response is linked with a specific type of anxiety, and information plays a significant role in their respective response mechanism. The results will help understand individual behavior towards anxieties and help policymakers develop pandemic management models more effectively.
