Abstract

Abstract Summary Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, a novel beta coronavirus, and it was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation on 11 March 2020, after 118,000 cases and 4291 deaths were reported across 114 countries. Tremendous burdens have subsequently been placed on patients and international healthcare services, especially intensive care units. This chapter reviews the epidemiology of this pandemic and the pathophysiology of both pulmonary and extrapulmonary disease. It then turns to specific organ support modalities, covering respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal support. Finally, it discusses the current state of pharmacological interventions for patients with COVID-19 and the risks of secondary infections among such patients.
