Abstract

The first case of COVID-19, the disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), in sub-Saharan Africa was confirmed in Nigeria on Feb 27, 2020, followed by the first regional death in Burkina Faso on March 18, 2020.1 Since these initial events, more than 1 million cases and 20 000 deaths have been confirmed in the region.2 Despite initial fears of catastrophic spread and high mortality of COVID-19 in Africa, mainly because of high frequencies of HIV and tuberculosis co-infections in combination with weak health systems,1 the toll of the pandemic has remained lower than expected.
