Abstract

Severe allergic reactions to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are rare. In May 2021, the FDA expanded emergency use authorization of a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 12-15 years old. Contraindications to vaccination include history of severe allergic reaction to prior mRNA COVID-19 vaccine or vaccine component. Precautions include immediate allergic reaction to any other vaccine or polysorbate. Based on limited data, we expect that most pediatric patients with a history of allergic reaction to vaccines, polyethylene glycol (PEG), or polysorbate will tolerate mRNA COVID-19 vaccination.
