Abstract

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease (COVID-19) is usually mild in general population but few require hospitalization. Few recovered patients suffer from post-COVID-19 squeal. There have been few breakthrough COVID infections after COVID vaccination. Due to virus-induced immunosuppression, some patients get infected with secondary or other opportunistic infections. We here report a case of a diabetic male who was vaccinated with 2 doses of COVID vaccine and developed COVID-19 illness after 10 days of second dose of COVID-19 vaccination. He developed post-COVID sequel in the form of left-sided maxillary mucormycosis which required surgical and medical management. Thus, vaccination against COVID-19 may prevent from serious COVID illness but such patients can develop post-COVID illness sequel like mucormycosis in our case. Through this case report, the author aims to highlight the importance of keeping check on post-COVID-19 secondary opportunistic infections even in vaccinated individuals. Early diagnosis with a high index of suspicion is essential to start timely and effective treatment.
