Abstract

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chains (SCs) have been exposed to their greatest disruption in recent memory. This unprecedented situation has given rise to the concept of SC survivability, which is based on the need to find a new temporary equilibrium allowing to SCs to survive during such a crisis. This paper aims to provide some basic foundations of this new concept. To analyze SC survivability, we propose a new conceptual framework based on a holistic view of SCs that focuses on the satisfaction of the basic human needs. This framework may enable decision makers to come to a better understanding of the interdependencies between SCs, society and the environment, and to help them to develop survival strategies that best fit with those SCs. We also show the relationship between survivability, viability, sustainability and resilience.
