• COVID-19 disease severity is strongly linked to host viral immunity. • Host viral immunity is affected by the lung and gut microbiome. • Monocyte dysfunction in aging plays an essential role in the progression of COVID-19 disease. • The lung and gut microbiome may be a potential therapeutic target for COVID-19.
