Abstract
We read with interest and concern the report by Lewin et al in the January 2006 issue of Annals of Emergency Medicine.1 They reported a case of covert psychotropic medications to subdue an agitated patient in the emergency department (ED). They argue that use of covert psychotropic medications might be an effective strategy to control a select group of extremely violent patients. We feel that the use of covert medications is unethical and inherently problematic.
