Abstract

According to the National Institute of Corrections, the number of prisoners age 55 and older quadrupled between 1993 and 2013. The aging prison population strains the correctional system and is considered a major crisis that American society has not yet adequately addressed. See the related article by Jeffrey M. Levine, pages 3689-3689.
