During atherosclerosis development, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) simulates macrophage PKM2 expression and PKM2 in return promotes the uptake of LDL by macrophages. In contrast, PKM2 inhibitor blocks the progression of mouse atherosclerosis. PKM2 is thus a druggable target for atherosclerosis.
