Abstract

Cover: Since the RMS Titanic, rusticles have been a mystery often attributed to deep‐sea bacteria feeding on the ship's iron. We propose another mechanism. The process initiates with coating or surface defects followed by localised corrosion. This localized corrosion is enhanced by deep‐seawater chemistry and hydrostatic pressure, which also increases the iron oxide porosity. Rusticle growth patterns over the shipwrecks indicate that water‐saturated areas are more prone to rusticle formation.More detailed information can be found in: Lina Marcela Silva‐Bedoya, Elizabeth Watkin, Laura L.
