Abstract

Fluorescence photo of a juvenile seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) one day post-birth with Alizarin Red staining indicating mineralization/ossification. At this stage, the characteristic joined bony plates are already forming and once fully developed, combine into a both rigid and flexible body armor and provide stability to the pectoral fin apparatus, amongst others. From: A comparative analysis of the ontogeny of syngnathids (pipefishes and seahorses) reveals how heterochrony contributed to their diversification; Ralf F. Schneider, Joost M.
