Abstract

Cancer cell lines modified to express luciferase create enhanced murine xenograft models where developing tumors are uniquely bioluminescent. Using non-invasive CCD camera imaging, Kalikin et al. show the locations of metastatic prostate cancer hind limb bone lesions and axillary lymph node tumors in a SCID mouse after intracardiac injection of luciferase-tagged PC-3 cells. By plotting whole animal emission photons (Y axis, natural log (ln) photons/second) obtained from weekly imaging (X axis, week post-intracardiac injection), the authors also calculate rates of disease progression, a valuable application for quantitatively evaluating novel pharmacological targets for future clinical strategies.
