Abstract

This issue of the Journal of Morphology is devoted to research on the eggs and embryos of extant sauropsids and mammals. Contributions include reviews and original research papers on embryo morphology and development; functional morphology of the yolk sac; eggshell structure and extraembryonic membranes; placental morphology and evolution in viviparous reptiles; and the role of feto‐maternal signaling in placental evolution. Two papers reviewing the history of research and a comparative phylogenetic analysis of the egg of amniotes contribute historical perspectives.
