Abstract

3D mesh patterns were deposited on the bond coat surface of thermal barrier coatings using laser powder deposition technique, which could dramatically improve the life of the coatings. The parameters of the mesh, e.g., height, spacing length, are crucial to the durability and failure behavior. (a) Buckling of air‐plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings with mesh‐patterned substrate after thermal cycling; (b) surface topography measured from the buckled region using optical profilometry; (c) cross‐sectional image showing the coating delamination from the bond coat surface; (d) the height profile across the buckle center (dash line) and the corresponding residual stress along the line.
