Abstract

Owing to the global environmental policies for decarbonization, conversion of waste CO2 into value-added products is the research focus today. Although CO2 is an excellent C1 source, due to its inherent thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness most of the carboxylation reactions using CO2 are far from practical as they require high pressure of CO2, harsh conditions, high energy input etc. To circumvent this, photo- and electrocatalysis have emerged as state-of-the-art and promising technique for carboxylation with CO2. In this review, we chronologically present the development of these modern carboxylation reactions aiming towards sustainable development.
