Abstract

The iron-sulfur cluster is one of the most versatile cofactors in nature. This cover feature highlights the study of an iron-sulfur cluster dependent enzyme, catalysing the dehydration reaction of dihydroxy acids to α-ketoacids. This is one of the key steps in the valorisation of biomass and industrial by-products to chemicals, feed, and biofuels. Combining in silico prediction with in vitro validation, structure-function relationships were deduced, and a more active variant toward a non-natural reaction was designed.
