Abstract

Think globally, act locally: The trade-off between the global and local expression of aromaticity is demonstrated for a series of π-conjugated macrocyclic furans of various sizes. Whereas smaller macrocycles are planar, larger macrocycles distort out of planarity, thereby avoiding global antiaromaticity, and display increasing character of local aromaticity.
