Abstract

A portfolio of photochemical transformations found in a variety of areas can be rationalized through consideration of either gain of 4nπ-electron aromaticity or relief of (4n+2) π-electron antiaromaticity in excited states of ππ* character. These back-of-an-envelope tools provided by Baird's rule serve as a compass for excursions in electronically excited states. More information can be found in the Review by H. Ottosson and co-workers (DOI: 10.1002/chem.202203748).
