Abstract

The Cover Feature illustrates the types of ion correlations that are found in solid and liquid electrolytes used in lithium-based batteries. The effect of such correlations on the overall mass and change transport, e.g. the salt diffusion coefficient and the transference number of lithium, can be described by combining linear response theory and Onsager′s linear irreversible thermodynamics. In this Review, the theoretical foundation for ionic correlations in solid and liquid electrolytes is presented and applied to recent literature reports. More information can be found in the Review by N. M. Vargas-Barbosa and B. Roling on page 367 in Issue 2, 2020 (DOI: 10.1002/celc.201901627).
