Abstract

The seed wasp Megastigmus schimitscheki (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) is a highly specialized predispersal seed predator of cedars (Cedrus spp.) that occurs in Middle East as a native species and in southern France as an invasive species. Heterogeneous spatio‐temporal patterns of seed production by its obligate host have been important selective forces shaping the wasp's life‐cycle towards propensities to both temporal and spatial dispersal. Predispersal predator‐tree interactions provide many ways to assess the mechanisms involved in evolutionary diversification and ecological specialization of insects (see pages 182–198).
