Covariant string field theory and effective action

Abstract

We suggest a new approach to the covariant formulation of the second-quantized Bose string field theory. It is based on covariant Polyakov sums over surfaces. The background field method effective action in the resulting functional Φ 3-theory is identified with the effective action (depending on the infinite number of local fields corresponding to string modes) proposed earlier.
