Abstract

We investigate the implications of various ways of realizing superconformal invariance on the world-sheet, in the franework of the bosonic covariant lattice approach to fermionic strings. We discuss in detail the role of a certain type of gauge interactions, and clarify their group theoretical structure. The results are relevant for lower dimensional heterotic and type II string theories. We show that (in our approach) there exists no four-dimensional type II theory containing the standard model.
