Abstract

This chapter describes the covalent enzyme immobilization in different porous polymer membranes. The two potential strategies are investigated: (1) Formation of asymmetric ultrafiltration membranes (UFM) by phase inversion from special polymers with reactive epoxide groups for direct coupling of enzymes. (2) Heterogeneous pore surface functionalization of commercial symmetric microfiltration membranes (MFM) from non-reactive polymers with carboxylic or amino groups and sequential activation/coupling immobilization of enzymes. Enzyme binding capacities and activities, membrane permeabilities and EMR performance were evaluated using amyloglucosidase (AG) and invertase (INV) as model systems. Inulin synthesis with covalently immobilized inulin sucrase (FTF) in the EMR is studied.
