Abstract

The results of Mössbauer studies on the hydrates of ferrous chloride show a nearly linear correlation between the quadrupole splitting and isomer shift. The correlation is discussed in terms of central field and symmetry restricted covalency. A comparative analysis of the present correlation and previous results on anhydrous ferrous halides reveals information about the relative importance of ρ and π bonds in these compounds.
