Abstract

The lattice parameters a( T) and c( T) as a function of temperature T for Mn 7Sn 4 and Mn 7Sn 3Ge with the Ni 2In-type crystal structure have been measured. In both materials, the anomalous thermal expansions in a( T) and c( T) are observed in an anisotropic fashion at the ferrimagnetic Curie temperature but in an isotropic one at the spin-glass-like transition temperature. The obtained results are qualitatively discussed from a viewpoint of the band picture and the difference in covalency between Sn and Ge atoms.
