Abstract

India is described as the world’s largest functioning democracy, with its enormous population and cultural diversity. The Indian legal system is an integration of many legal traditions which have been part of different civilizations and cultures that have ruled India over the centuries. An independent judiciary at the heart of the structure of constitutional control guarantees a trustworthy system of checks and balances in governance. The judiciary also acts as an instrument of social change and development. In recent years, the Supreme Court of India has played an ‘activist’ role in influencing Indian society.
