Abstract

A light beam can be coupled with a surface plasmon wave by means of a prism-film coupler. This device is analysed in detail by the method of plane-wave expansion. It is shown that the coupling efficiency is determined by the optical constants of the prism-film coupler as well as by the transverse field distribution in the incident beam. A general condition for optimum coupling efficiency is derived. It is found that for Gaussian input beams a coupling efficiency greater than 30% can be achieved in actual systems.
