Abstract

1. It has been established that, unlike cast materials, when press fitting porous cermet bearings an increase of interference does not lead to a noticeable increase of strength. 2. It has been shown that wall thickness, porosity, and material of the bearing has an effect on the value of the relative strength coefficient. A decrease of wall thickness to 5 mm promotes a change of the inside diameter by a quantity equal to about half of the interference. 3. The surface finish of the cermet bearing has a negligible effect on the coefficient of relative coupling strength: with an improvement of surface finish there is an increase of coupling strength. 4. It has been established that the most effective means of hardening the couplings of porous bearings with seats of steel housing is by sizing or machining the contacting surfaces under optimal conditions for the particular case. This made it possible to increase the coupling strength to 40–50% in comparison with unhardened bearings.
