Abstract

Abstract A combined hydrodynamical transport and ecological model system with 12 state variables is presented. Numerical oscillations in the solution of the advection of ecological parameters, as they may appear in areas of steep fronts, may give rise to numerical problems in the solution of the ecological equation system. This has been examined with use of the upwind, quickest, msou and quickest-ultimate advection schemes by an application to the North Sea, simulating a complete seasonal cycle. The effect of using different advection schemes on the ecological simulations is discussed.
