Abstract
When the emission of a laser diode is launched directly into an appropriate multimode fibre, the losses are between 4 and 5 dB. Because the fibre end is not an optical surface these losses could be reduced to about 0.1 dB by immersing the fibre end. The mechanical positioning of the fibre is ± 1° angular deviation and ± 5 μm lateral deviation if 0.22 dB losses are allowed.
