Abstract

Coupled-mode equations are presented for an interdigital transducer for leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAWs). We introduce two immittance elements: the real parts of two immittances represent the propagation loss due to back-scattered bulk waves and the radiation loss due to bulk waves excited by electrodes; the imaginary parts represent the energy storage effect due to nonradiated bulk waves. Assuming that the immittances can be approximated with functions of frequency which were proposed by Abbott and Hashimoto for the coupling coefficient between LSAWs and bulk waves under shorted gratings, we demonstrate good approximations of dispersion curves for infinite shorted and open gratings on a 36° Y-X LiTaO3 substrate.
