Abstract

Thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) of vitreous silica (tetrasil SE) irradiated with alpha particles has revealed a correlation between the effects of alpha irradiation and a change in thermally stimulated luminescence. The defect centers producing some components in the TSL and ESR spectra are E′ centers. After the sample was annealed at 623 K a new signal was detected in the ESR spectra. It was detected in the oxygen-deficient regions of the sample. The radiation damage in the samples was determined by measuring the changes in the TSL produced by alpha irradiation (2.4 × 10 5 Gy). The creation of new defects was correlated with the formation of oxygen vacancies. These defects created by alpha particles were partially reversible by thermal treatments.
